Deez Butts Bar-B-Que

Along the side of interstate 65 South, there is a marvelous sign advertising one of the world’s most awesome flea markets! Not sure what exit, but I know it is in Shepherdsville Kentucky. As we traveled to Bowling Green for a family reunion, last Saturday a new sign caught my eye. Dee’s Butt BBQ. It was adorable.

Of course, I must provide you with a scene: I am driving down the interstate, on a time line, mom is in the passenger’s seat. We are chit chatting back and forth. She is making fun of me for being Ms. Social Butterfly in Dollar Store and appears to be fretting over the time frame because we are supposed to be at the reunion by 1 o’clock, their time. She hasn’t told me she is worried, but I know. However, I had planned accordingly and was confident we would arrive promptly at 1.

Then it happened once again! I saw the sign of the cute pig, with her back to us and it was advertising some of the best BBQ in the area. The first sign I ignored. Then the second sign appeared and I believe there was a third, but secretly I might have made that up! My body was screaming BBQ, my mind was saying, “Do it. Turn off. You have time. Enjoy the journey if BBQ is what you want, stop and pick it up.”

I decided to make myself almost nauseated so I had an excuse! Finally, the exit was coming up…what do I do? My palms are sweaty, my stomach is burning for fear of what mommy is going to do or say. I knew I was about to upset her. I Weave in and out of traffic, Oh know a trucker has pulled between me and the exit! Oh forget it, I will eat at the reunion. I dropped my head and just kept listening. It’s okay I know we need to arrive on time. Truthfully, I didn’t need any BBQ anyways. (Keep reading I will tell you about my infatuation with BBQ and why I think I have it!) I was sad, but it’s okay maybe next time!

PSYCHE! Are you kidding me? If you have read anything I have written lately, you will know I miss nothing that is fun and adventurous! Yes, a truck did pull between me and the glorious BBQ! However, I checked behind me, braked, zipped over and shew I made it!!! Now, where is that BBQ?

In her mind, my mother was freaking out, but I reassured her, we would arrive at the family reunion no later than 1 o’clock!

We drove down the road a bit, searching for Dee’s. I must admit I was becoming concerned! What if I don’t find it, I should have stuck to the course. Then the arrow appeared this way to BBQ! Oh no!!!!! It is at the Flea Market! We drove in the gigantic parking lot, booths everywhere, people shopping, signs of corn dogs, fresh veggies and lemon shake-ups, but no BBQ. Finally, someone pointed to the building and told me it was inside. Left mom in the car and I was on the hunt. Funniest thing ever! When I walked in and requested more specific directions, it was on the opposite end of the building. When I finally reached destination Dee’s Butts, a line of twenty people or more were standing there just as excited as me. I will admit I almost turned around, but my heart kept saying no you deserve this, you have come too far, a little wait will not hurt you.

The line moved pretty quickly and I was up to order. I picked it up and went as fast as I could to the car. We stopped at a gas station and gobbled it up. As for the BBQ, it was good. I would definitely recommend Deez Butts Bar-B-Que,  in Shepherdsville Kentucky.

You see, it wasn’t all about the BBQ. It was more about the feeling attached to wandering off the course. Yes, I will admit these BBQ cravings have become hilarious since I broke my leg. I don’t know if my body is craving the protein, for healing or if it is something else. However, I now love BBQ and I love to stop, chase down a stand and enjoy the feeling of hmmm…let’s call it Big Butts BBQ. I love the adventure, I love to taste it and savor it.

We arrived at ten till one and everyone was happy to see us. It turned out to be a magnificent day visiting with family, eating more food and being together. (The BBQ was a precursor to how amazing our trip was going to be!)

If it is BBQ or canoeing it doesn’t really matter what brings you joy, but if you want more joy then do more of whatever it is. There are many paths to take in life, the greatest part is you get to choose when to change paths or want to continue on. Live to be happy!!! You deserve it.

So many items to write about…

I hope you have enjoyed reading my writings, as much as I have enjoyed blogging. I have been extremely blessed with amazing people and events. The unfolding of daily living, when you expect the best for you, is simply described as awesome!

For example: I felt like the last few days I was running a marathon, even in my sleep. However, each day was filled from early morning to late at night, with precious moments. Some have been reflections and yet others have been divine intervention to assist me or someone else.

Each morning I would begin with a quick meditation, consisting of clearing my mind similar to a blank canvas. Next, focus on my breath for about two minutes, finally I would look for fun filled events scheduled for the day. What? You want to know if I schedule a fun event everyday? Yes, yes, yes, yes I do and I won’t stop!

Of course, I am like everyone else in the world, where sometimes you have tasks that are not as pleasurable as others. However, if you do not schedule something fun in each day; the days turn into weeks, weeks turn into months. Before long you are a shell of a human, who might schedule a 1 or 2 week of vacation to ‘have fun’ and enjoy the people you love! The scariest factor is if this is the case, by the time you arrive at the glorious vacation, to have fun, you are exhausted and probably forgot how to have fun. This makes me sad!

Begin each morning with gratefulness, good feelings, and schedule something fun/happy each day! If something henders your ‘feeling good’ vibration focus on what you want or a solution. Life is meant to be glorious, therefore live like it!

Enjoy the journey! Smell the flowers! Listen to the beautiful music all around you! Tell yourself in the mirror how special, beautiful, fabulous, healthy, happy and anything else you are!

When the day is done, lay your head down and take a few minutes to review the great feelings of the day! If there were some bumps in the road remember, you can’t change anything in the past therefore, only focus on the good parts and the rest will take care of itself.

You truly are amazing!

Why Grow Up?

Someone made the comment to me, “Teena will you ever grow up?”

I remember thinking, hmmmm no I do not plan on it. Truly, I have already been there and done that. I can remember teaching with my friends and me telling them, I love kids because they haven’t accepted all the judgements, concerns, and hypocrisy of adulthood, yet.

When I say I have already done that, I have. You see as parents we are forced to ‘grow up’ or as I entitle it, conforming to society’s demands. However, I always searched for a way to spice life up a bit, by creating a fun yet safe environment to just be free.

While discussing parenting with some friends we all agreed, we should call and thank our parents for keeping us alive becausee we were fearless at one time. No barriers or connection to fear.

I am not saying you should become frivolous and not care about anything. However, if you take time to create a list of your daily activities and it consist of work, eating, cooking, cleaning and sleeping, IT IS TIME!!! Time for you to grow down a bit. Begin searching for something fun to do once a week. After you begin this journey you will search for more and more. It will become your quest.

If you are a parent with children at home, my advice to you, is create a family fun time and an individual one as well. When my kids were little I would take a ‘Me’ day. (Probably Eric thinks I live in a me day, now lol). When we didn’t have money to go out, I created family fun days, For example: we had Wacky Wednesdays.

Wacky Wednesdays or Terrific Tuesdays, Freaky Fridays, it doesn’t matter about the day or title. I knew we had to eat anyways. Therefore, I would make it fun!! Sometimes it was our attire: we all had to wear a hat, a tie, our clothes inside out, or maybe even pajamas. I would light candles, play music, allow the kids to help cook and set the ambiance. There were very few limitations (safety first). Sometimes it was a disaster, but I continually remember even the disasters were beautiful.

We did everything from desert first, colored our food, and/or special music by the Drake kids. One of my favorite memories is – the evening we had saved to purchase some nice steaks, ice cream and toppings for the ice cream. We began with allowing the kids to create a ‘snow ball’ out of ice cream and roll them in the toppings, of their choice. They ate them first because life is too short to not eat dessert first!!!

The next portion of the evening was our delicious steaks! However, (remember I only chose to grow up for those parenting moments necessary to assist my kids to stay alive and be accepted) I thought it would be fun to food color all of our food. Therefore, I colored the mashed potatoes blue and for some reason I colored the meat with GREEN. As the evening was wrapping up we were all sitting at the table, in the dark, with at least five candles. It was beautiful. Music playing in the background all the kids were excited and then…Darion needed some ketchup. I flipped on the light, Eric had eaten half of his steak and when I shined some light on his plate, he looked at his steak and immediatly yelled!!!! “Kids don’t eat the steak!!!! It is bad meat!! Teena throw this meat away.”

I turned and looked at my wonderful husband with a puzzled look. “What are you talking about?”

At that point I realized what was happening and I began to laugh hysterically. The kids were sitting paralyzed, appearing to be in a trance, as well as holding their breath. They all three fixed their eyes on daddy to see if he was mad. Therefore, a ten second period of silence felt like an eternity. Next we all begin to let out a little giggle and one by one each of us began laughing until our cheeks hurt.

Regardless of anything negative happening the end result was all we needed. To laugh, giggle, and let go.

It’s time for you to choose to enjoy!!! If you have five wonderful events fall into place which creates happiness for you, yet one not so happy slips into your realm, similar to our meat incident; focus on the other five! If you can laugh at your one negative situation and quickly switch it around, then do that. No matter what take time be grateful for the good moments and guess what? More and more good moments will occur.

There is a time and a place for everything!! I agree growing up isn’t so bad! As long as you promise to return to the bliss, honesty, and freedom of being a child occasionally, you will have a great life and happiness will fill your soul.
